Current e(lab) project- the train that moved water

Over this period of uncertainty, I felt the need to create and surround myself with inspiring artists and collaborators. Since September 2020, I have been nurturing an idea for a solo work that originated with a child’s train set. Using the train set as a metaphor, I began to explore the journey of creativity and curiosity from childhood innocence to adulthood. What is creativity? Do we lose this childhood innocence of creativity when we grow up? Does that sense of wonder start to dissipate? Does it get lost or just change? These wonderings drove me to research children and their interest in trains which, I discovered, hold a special fascination for children with autism.

As one of my artistic goals is to explore ways to make dance and theatre more accessible to the whole spectrum of society, I want to adapt our creative environment to be more inclusive.

During the past couple months, I have met international artists from a variety of art mediums that support this same vision.

As the leader of this project, I am excited to work with Charlotte Bydwell, Adrian Leaung, BAMA Video Productions, and OPEN SPACE. I presented my ideas to these artists, and the work to be created will be The Train That Moved Water. Together we will bring this idea to life with two end results: a live performance and a film.

Canadian born dramaturg Charlotte Bydwell will play a major role in helping create the theatrical elements needed in both the stage and film versions of the piece. She will be my assistant, and I will rely on her to bounce ideas off and help create the overall look of the project. I met Charlotte during this pandemic, and I was instantly drawn to working with her. Her ability to encourage and push will help me incorporate the research into actualizing the elements of the piece.

The project will come to life with original music composed by Australian/Hong Kong composer Adrian Leaung. His music range and talent will support the voice and choreography in both mediums.

BAMA Video Productions will play a vital part in creating and animating the film portion of this project. Their beautiful eye for translating dance into film will create a captivating world.

Finally, I am honoured to accept a residency at OPEN SPACE in Portland, Oregon. Their openness to creativity, community, and inclusiveness will support this project until its premier. OPEN SPACE will host the premier in August.

With your donations you can be a part of this creation and the process.
